It took 3 days for us to find the right tickets to go to Africa. Our plan from the start was to use our frequent flier miles. We were coming up on 800,000 amex miles and it was time to do something spectacular with them. So after we signed up for a volunteer trip with Earthwatch (www.earthwatch.com) we decided to use our miles to go to South Africa business class and then on to Namibia on a local airline.
Easier said than done.
There were different combinations to the equation. Fewer miles + high taxes ($600 each for coach and over $1000 each for business class), more miles + lower taxes, medium miles + medium taxes + no available flights....... in the end we let go of more miles that we had originally planned, but we have a pretty amazing trip planned!
Since we were not able to get our original dates, we settled for leaving a little earlier than planned. KLM is allowing us to spend a two day layover in Amsterdam prior to acclimating to to Southern Hemisphere. We will then head to Johannesburg for a night before flying up to Cape Town. Finally we will land in Namibia...
The trip is still about three months away, but I am already starting to pack.
I just can't help it!
